Job Description
- This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Platform Backend Engineer based in Canada. This is a senior backend engineering opportunity focused on building the cloud platform behind a browser-based, real-time 3D creation experience. You will design and operate highly scalable services supporting real-time collaboration, publishing pipelines, content delivery, and platform APIs. The role combines distributed systems engineering, cloud infrastructure, API design, reliability, and production ownership. You will work closely with engineers, product managers, and designers to turn complex and ambiguous problems into reliable, customer-facing solutions. As a senior contributor, you will influence technical direction, improve engineering practices, and mentor other engineers. The environment is fast-moving and collaborative, with an emphasis on shipping iteratively while maintaining strong reliability and observability. Experience with real-time, multiplayer, gaming, or interactive 3D systems is particularly valuable but not essential.
- Accountabilities Design, develop, deploy, and operate backend services supporting real-time collaborative editing, game publishing, content delivery, and other platform capabilities. Own services end-to-end across architecture, implementation, deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and production operations. Evolve the platform architecture to support stateful real-time workloads, session routing, service fleets, and increasing scale in a cloud-native environment. Define robust APIs and service contracts that enable editor and partner teams to build reliable experiences on top of the platform. Strengthen infrastructure and software delivery practices through infrastructure as code, CI/CD, automation, and repeatable deployment processes. Champion system reliability, observability, monitoring, and effective incident response, using production learnings to continuously improve services. Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineering teams to translate ambiguous requirements into practical, reliable features. Contribute to architectural and technical decisions that shape the platform's long-term direction. Mentor fellow engineers through code reviews, design discussions, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing. Help establish high engineering standards around scalability, maintainability, reliability, and overall software quality. Requirements Substantial professional experience designing, building, deploying, and operating production-grade backend services. Strong proficiency in one or more modern backend programming languages, with the adaptability to work across multiple technologies when required. Solid understanding of distributed systems, including API design, data persistence, state management, scalability, and architectural trade-offs. Hands-on experience with cloud platforms and containerized, orchestrated application deployments. Proven ownership of production services, including monitoring, debugging, operational support, and incident response. Strong understanding of cloud-native engineering practices, automated deployment, infrastructure as code, and CI/CD. Pragmatic engineering mindset with the ability to navigate ambiguity, prioritize effectively, and make sensible technical trade-offs under real-world deadlines. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Experience working in cross-functional, fast-paced engineering environments. Experience with real-time or multiplayer systems, WebSockets, collaborative editing, or state synchronization is an advantage. Experience with game development, interactive media, the Unity Engine, or other real-time 3D technologies is a plus. Professional proficiency in English is required for frequent communication with globally distributed colleagues and partners. Benefits Remote working opportunity in Canada. Competitive base salary ranging from CAD $125,300–$175,300 in Zone A or CAD $135,400–$203,000 in Zone B, depending on primary work location and experience. Potential eligibility for equity awards and company incentive programs, such as annual discretionary bonuses. Comprehensive health, life, and disability insurance, subject to local eligibility. Competitive retirement or pension plans. Generous vacation and personal leave programs. Support for new parents through leave and family-care programs. Employee stock ownership opportunities. Mental health and wellbeing programs and global employee assistance resources. Employee resource groups and an inclusive, collaborative workplace. Training, learning, and professional development opportunities. Volunteering and donation-matching programs. No relocation support or work visa/immigration sponsorship is available for this position.
